The Firefighters Burn Fund

As a result of their exposure as first responders to emergencies of all kinds and their sincere concern about the care, treatment and rehabilitation of burn victims, the Fire Fighters are committed to doing something about it.

The Firefighters Burn Fund was created in March, 1978 and is a registered charitable organization, duly incorporated in the Province of Manitoba. Originally organized by Winnipeg Fire Fighters, the Burn Fund now involves and is supported by members of the Fire Service throughout Manitoba.

The Firefighters Burn Fund is a volunteer run organization. No salaries are paid to any Board Member or volunteer. The Burn Fund is not a member agency of The United Way, nor does it receive government grants. Therefore, we rely entirely on donations and proceeds from fundraising activities.

Fire Safety Trailers

The Burn Fund has funded 7 fire safety trailers which are strategically placed in communities around the province to provide as much coverage as possible.

The safety trailers are designed to teach children about fire and safety hazards in different areas of their homes. Lessons taught include topics such as: kitchen safety, what to do if the smoke detector is activated, how to call 911, checking a door for heat to determine if there is fire on the other side, crawling low in smoke. Children are also taught how to create a home escape plan with their parents, always having 2 ways to exit the house, gathering at a pre-determined location, and calling 9-1-1 once safely out of the house.

The Fire Prevention Fund

In 2005, we established the Fire Prevention Fund to assist Fire Departments in the development and delivery of fire and burn prevention programs in their communities. Those departments determine their needs, develop a plan, cost it out and submit a proposal for consideration of financial support. Depending on the number of applications received and available funds, the Burn Fund will consider providing seed money towards the project or funding in full. Examples of previous funding has included smoke alarm battery replacement program, Fire Safety Trailers, Youth Fire Stop Program, and the Learn Not To Burn Program.

Support for Members of the Burn Team

The Burn Fund supports ongoing educational opportunities for members of the Burn Team (Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists). This includes continuing educational seminars, conferences, developing research skills(Journal Club), etc.
